UK Launches Innovative Coastal Monitoring System with Drones and Robotics
The Smart Skies, Healthy Waters project, led by Northumbrian Water, has secured nearly £6M funding for a 'lab-in-a-box' system to enhance coastal water monitoring. This initiative aims to provide real-time data and predictive intelligence, addressing public health and environmental risks associated with water quality.

The Smart Skies, Healthy Waters initiative, a collaboration led by Northumbrian Water, has received close to £6M from the Ofwat Innovation Fund as of May 2025. The project incorporates autonomous drones, robotics, and real-time sensors to monitor UK coastal bathing waters effectively.
A key feature is the 'lab-in-a-box', a mobile laboratory for rapid analysis, facilitating real-time environmental data streaming, drone-enabled water sampling, and automated lab processing. A significant technical milestone was achieved in March 2026 with a patent filing. This system aims to improve monitoring frequency and accuracy, potentially reducing risks to public health and the environment as it learns from data over time.
