UK Prepares Live Tests for Hypersonic Aircraft Invictus by 2031
The UK is set to conduct live tests of the hypersonic aircraft Invictus, aiming for Mach 5 speeds by 2031. This initiative highlights significant advancements in hypersonic technology and its potential applications in satellite delivery and high-speed civil transport.

The UK is advancing its hypersonic aircraft program, Invictus, with live tests scheduled by 2031, supported by a budget of approximately €7 million. Potential testing sites include Spaceport Cornwall and Machrihanish in Scotland, with a key milestone in site selection expected by November 2025.
The project focuses on horizontal takeoff and landing to enhance cost-efficiency and reusability. Invictus is designed to reach speeds over 6,115 km/h and operate at altitudes around 24,400 m. The program aims to address the material challenges of sustained hypersonic flight through advanced cooling technologies.
While initial flights will not carry passengers, they will focus on satellite launches and defense tests. The completion of preliminary designs is anticipated this year, with engine testing planned for 2027.
