UK Revises AI Data Center Greenhouse Gas Emission Estimates Significantly Upward
The UK government acknowledges a staggering underestimation of over 100 times in greenhouse gas emissions from AI data centers. This revision challenges the commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century amid plans for large-scale data center construction.

The UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has updated its greenhouse gas emissions forecast for AI data centers, now estimating at least 34 MtCO₂ for the decade ending in 2035, a significant increase from the prior estimate of 0.25 MtCO₂. This revised figure reflects a 136-fold rise in emissions, raising concerns about the UK's climate goals and the implications of maintaining gas-fired power plants.
Additionally, water consumption projections for these facilities have also been revised upwards, indicating further environmental impact. The government's dual objectives of expanding data centers while aiming for net-zero emissions may create operational conflicts.
