UK Secures Record 8.4GW Offshore Wind Contracts in Historic Auction
WIND ENERGY
The UK Government has secured 8.4GW of offshore wind capacity in its Contracts for Difference Auction Round 7, generating enough electricity to power 12 million homes. This auction will unlock £22 billion in private investment and support approximately 7,000 jobs.
The average cost for fixed offshore wind is £90.91 per megawatt hour, which is 40% cheaper than new gas generation at £147 per megawatt hour. Projects span regions including Dogger Bank, Norfolk Vanguard, Berwick Bank, and Awel y Môr, marking a significant shift towards energy sovereignty and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. The results indicate a commitment to achieving clean power by 2030.
