UK Steel Faces Key Challenges Amid Global Overcapacity and Green Transition
The UK steel industry is at a critical juncture as it navigates global overcapacity, safeguard measures, and green transition efforts. Without the extension of measures to finished steel products, producers may face significant risks.

UK Steel's trade and economic policy director, Peter Brennan, highlighted the industry's challenges, emphasizing the need for coordination between the UK and the EU on safeguard measures and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He noted that the future of British Steel is uncertain following government interventions, and electric arc furnaces are becoming increasingly important.
The green transition is expected to reshape the scrap supply chain, prompting the UK to shift from being a major international exporter to increasing domestic raw material utilization. This transition may impact competitive positioning in the global market.
