The UK plans to install the DragonFire laser weapon system on a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer by 2027. Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed that the programme, currently in its demonstration phase, is utilizing a new procurement approach to expedite timelines.
Following successful trials, DragonFire is being developed for a 'minimum deployable capability'. The system, built by MBDA UK, Leonardo UK, QinetiQ, and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, uses a high-energy laser to counter threats like drones.
It has demonstrated a high degree of accuracy and is noted for its low cost per shot, estimated at around £10. The technology may also be adapted for use on land and air platforms.
