UK to Reduce Development Assistance to Malawi by 90% by 2028/29
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) plans to cut aid to Malawi from £50.2 million in 2025/26 to £5 million by 2028/29, representing a 90% reduction. This move aims to redirect funds towards increased defense spending amid a broader 52% decrease in UK aid to Africa.

The UK government has announced a reduction in development assistance to Malawi, decreasing from £50.2 million in 2025/26 to £20 million in 2026/27, £10 million in 2027/28, and £5 million in 2028/29. This decision, attributed to the necessity of boosting defense spending, is part of a broader strategy that will see UK aid to Africa drop from £1.449 billion to £693.8 million.
The 90% cut for Malawi is significantly deeper than the average reduction across Africa. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on vulnerable populations in Malawi, with warnings about worsening hunger and healthcare access. Critics, including military leaders, assert that such funding cuts could undermine long-term security interests for the UK.
