UK's First Industrial Waste-to-Hydrogen Plant Proposed in Kent
Plans for the UK's inaugural industrial-scale waste-to-hydrogen facility have been submitted, targeting an investment of £120 million. The project, led by Hydrogen Transition Energy, aims to convert 22,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually into hydrogen fuel, supporting the decarbonisation of transport and public services.

A planning application has been lodged with Kent County Council for a waste-to-hydrogen plant on a 16-acre site near Ramsgate, with an investment of approximately £120 million. The facility is expected to process 22,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste each year, generating 34 megawatts of power.
It will operate 24 hours a day, with around 54 lorries visiting weekly for waste intake and hydrogen distribution. The project aims to produce fuel-cell-grade hydrogen while reducing carbon emissions by about 109,000 tonnes annually.
It includes an education centre and is designed to minimize visual impact through landscaping. The application underwent public consultation and includes a full Environmental Impact Assessment.
