UK's Green Tea Project Converts Kenya's Tea Waste into Clean Energy and Fertilizer

HYDROGEN

The Green Tea project, supported by the UK, aims to convert tea waste into clean energy and fertilizer in Kenya, which produces about half of the tea consumed in Britain. The initiative addresses challenges faced by over 600,000 smallholder farmers impacted by climate change, resulting in reduced tea yields and rising production costs.

The project uses artisanal biochar to enhance soil health and tea flavor. Browns Plantation in Kericho is piloting technology from Compact Syngas Solutions, which converts tea waste into synthesis gas and biochar, reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional methods.

The pilot has created additional employment opportunities and is expected to expand to other tea factories in Kenya. Funding from Innovate UK's energy catalyst program and the UN Industrial Development Organisation has supported the initiative, aiming to improve livelihoods and sustainability in the Kenyan tea sector.
