The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) have launched a five-year partnership to advance water-efficient and non-sewered sanitation solutions in South Africa. The initiative, announced at UKZN's Howard College Campus, includes a R15 million investment over the first two years, with UKZN matching WRC's funding.
The partnership aims to transition research into practical applications, focusing on water-efficient sanitation systems that reduce reliance on sewer infrastructure, promote circular economy approaches, and develop educational programs. A joint steering committee will oversee the initiative, which addresses South Africa's water security and sanitation goals while contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 6.
