Ultra Gas & Energy to Develop 100 LNG Refuelling Stations by 2029
Essar's Ultra Gas & Energy is investing Rs 900 crore to establish a network of 100 LNG refuelling stations in India by 2029, addressing the reluctance of transporters to switch from diesel. The initiative aims to support the country's shift towards cleaner fuel options amid rising fuel costs and emissions concerns.

Ultra Gas & Energy aims to develop a network of 100 LNG refuelling stations by March 2029, with an investment of Rs 900 crore. Currently, the company operates seven stations along key freight routes such as Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Chennai, with plans to increase this to 15 by August and 20 by March 2027, covering 98% of major corridors.
The initiative addresses the industry's chicken-and-egg problem by collaborating with GAIL, Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, and Shell. As LNG trucks are currently more expensive than diesel vehicles, they are primarily adopted by large fleet operators. The shift towards LNG could serve as a transitional solution in the long-haul freight sector, as electric and hydrogen alternatives face significant hurdles.
