UNIDO and CIDCA Launch Small Hydropower Centre in Nigeria
The UNIDO and CIDCA have inaugurated the first Small Hydropower Centre of Excellence in Nigeria, aimed at enhancing electricity access. This initiative is crucial for addressing Nigeria's underutilized hydropower potential and promoting renewable energy solutions in the region.

The UNIDO, with support from the China International Development Cooperation Agency, inaugurated a Small Hydropower Centre of Excellence in Abuja, Nigeria, to address the country's electricity access challenges. This center will focus on knowledge transfer, technical training, and policy guidance in Small Hydropower (SHP) development, ultimately enhancing energy resilience in rural areas.
Despite having significant SHP potential, Nigeria has developed less than five percent due to various barriers. This project aims to bridge the energy gap, support hybrid renewable energy solutions, and drive socio-economic growth. The establishment of a steering committee will oversee its implementation.
