UNIFIL Enhances Lebanese Navy Maritime Security Capabilities
UNIFIL's Maritime Task Force is advancing training for the Lebanese Armed Forces Navy to assume maritime security duties by 2026. This initiative is crucial for enhancing Lebanon's control over its territorial waters and ensuring long-term stability.

UNIFIL's Maritime Task Force (MTF) has been collaborating with the Lebanese Armed Forces Navy (LAF-N) to enhance maritime security capabilities through training both at sea and in educational settings. A joint operational framework established in December outlines the LAF-N's progressive assumption of maritime security responsibilities through 2026.
The MTF, operational since October 2006 under Security Council Resolution 1701, aids the LAF-N in monitoring territorial waters and securing the coast to prevent unauthorized maritime activities. Effective patrolling of Lebanon's 110 nautical miles of coastline is a key objective of this mission, which includes support for the development of Lebanon's naval forces. Improved readiness and coordination are critical for achieving these maritime goals, indicating a broader impact on national stability.
