Union Pacific's Locomotive No. 4547 Transports Artemis III Rocket Components
Union Pacific Railroad's locomotive No. 4547 has commenced its inaugural freight mission, transporting components for NASA's Artemis III lunar program. This delivery signifies a critical step in supporting NASA's sustained lunar exploration objectives and the preparation for future missions.

Union Pacific's locomotive No. 4547 began its first mission hauling solid rocket motor segments for NASA's Artemis III program. The locomotive, built in collaboration with Wabtec, was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Union Pacific and Northrop Grumman leaders.
Northrop Grumman has also delivered the final eight booster segments for Artemis III to Kennedy Space Center, where assembly will occur this summer. The solid rocket boosters, generating 7.2 million pounds of thrust, are essential for the Space Launch System during the mission, slated to launch in summer 2027.
The integration of these components is crucial for advancing U.S. lunar exploration, with Artemis III serving as a precursor to subsequent missions including Artemis IV and V. Risks include potential delays related to lander readiness and timeline uncertainties.
