United Utilities Secures Approval for Wastewater Treatment Upgrade in Lake District
United Utilities has received approval to enhance the Near Sawrey Wastewater Treatment Works, aimed at reducing pollution in Windermere. The project includes new infrastructure designed to lower phosphorus levels entering the lake and its catchment area.

United Utilities plans to upgrade the Near Sawrey Wastewater Treatment Works to mitigate pollution in Cunsey Beck and the Windermere catchment. The project, approved by the Lake District National Park Authority on July 20, includes the installation of buried FujiClean units and other enhancements.
A traffic management plan will direct construction vehicles to use existing access routes, minimizing local road impacts. Friends of the Lake District supports the initiative but urges a comprehensive visual impact assessment and adherence to high-quality design standards due to the site's sensitive location. The improvements are expected to lead to cleaner water in local rivers and lakes, addressing concerns over untreated discharges.
