Università di Salerno to Launch Quantum Valley with €47 Million Quantum Computer Installation

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREQUANTUM COMPUTING

The University of Salerno will install a €47 million quantum computer, Quantum System Two, featuring an IBM Heron processor, in the former Ruggiero bookshop by summer. This marks the first quantum computer with the highest number of qubits in a public European institution.

Announced by Professor Canio Noce, the initiative, known as Quantum Valley, originates from the Campania region's former president, Vincenzo De Luca. The computer measures 7x7 centimeters, requiring a 4x4 meter space for the data center and environmental control systems.

The quantum computer can solve complex problems rapidly, such as cracking a 10-character alphanumeric password in minutes, compared to 10,000 years with classical computers. Its applications range from energy optimization to environmental monitoring and agricultural processes. A training program will also be established for students, fostering technological expertise and job creation in related fields.
