University of Florida Enhances Hurricane Impact Predictions with Advanced Computer Models

The University of Florida's Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment (ESSIE) has developed complex computer models to enhance predictions of future storm impacts on coastal communities. The project, awarded the Excellence in Partnering Award by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program, aimed to improve predictions of breaching, erosion, water levels, and property damage.

Spanning four years and concluding in April, researchers tested their models against data from six hurricanes, utilizing machine learning and diverse data sources, including local building permits. The HiPerGator supercomputer facilitated predicting specific storm effects for the first time. The project produced over 10 scientific papers and more than 50 presentations, with all data publicly available on DesignSafe to promote global collaboration in coastal resilience research.
