University of Freiburg Launches CircEL Project for Circular Economy Research Funded by Carl Zeiss Foundation
The University of Freiburg is initiating the CircEL project to explore a circular economy, funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation with three million euros over six years. This interdisciplinary research will assess legal and engineering frameworks needed to enhance sustainability through improved recycling and product design. The initiative aims to bridge gaps between legal requirements and practical implementation, fostering cooperation between engineering and law faculties and creating opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral research.

The University of Freiburg has launched the CircEL project to investigate pathways to a circular economy, with funding of three million euros from the Carl Zeiss Foundation over six years. The project will focus on extending the lifespan of materials and products through better recycling practices and legal frameworks.
An interdisciplinary team of engineers and legal scholars will address challenges in waste law, product design law, and warranty law for material defects. The initiative includes the creation of four doctoral theses and two postdoctoral positions, along with workshops and conferences aimed at fostering collaboration between engineering and law faculties.
