University of Oregon Board Delays Student Proposal for Electric Boiler System
The University of Oregon Board of Trustees postponed approval of a proposal to finance an electric boiler system using student fees, impacting climate goals. Students are urged to revise the proposal for future consideration amid concerns over greenhouse gas emissions and funding.

The University of Oregon Board of Trustees declined to approve a student-backed proposal for an electric boiler system, which aimed to utilize student building fee funds. Trustees advised students and administrators to revise the proposal for future discussions, with a special meeting possibly scheduled before June 30.
The proposal's urgency is heightened as several trustees' terms expire this month. The estimated cost for a 12-megawatt boiler has risen to between $21.5 million to $25 million, significantly higher than earlier estimates.
Concerns over increasing annual energy costs of $4.6 million to $6 million were also highlighted. If the current heating system persists, the substation would remain adequate until 2050, but modifications would necessitate expansion by 2035. The board expressed confusion about the proposal's language, delaying a vote despite general support for the concept.
