University of the Western Cape Launches Renewable Energy Golf Cart Shuttle
The University of the Western Cape has unveiled 'The Volt Cart', the first renewable energy-powered golf cart shuttle in Sub-Saharan Africa, developed by engineering graduates. This initiative aligns with South Africa's push towards renewable energy and advanced battery technology, addressing local skills shortages in the sector.

The University of the Western Cape has relaunched a golf cart, now named 'The Volt Cart', as the first campus shuttle powered by renewable energy. Revamped by engineering graduates from UWC's Energy Storage Innovation Lab, the cart features an advanced lithium-based battery offering a 140km range per charge and includes solar panels and an onboard inverter for additional power.
The initiative was part of a training program in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology and First Battery, highlighting the growing demand for local lithium battery expertise as South Africa imported $1 billion in batteries in 2023. The project also honors Olivier Kasikalaala, the main engineer, who passed away before its completion.
