The University of Utah has established the Institute for Critical and Strategic Minerals (ICSM) to enhance U.S. independence in critical minerals, crucial for advanced technologies. The initiative is supported by Utah legislative measures S.B. 254 and S.C.R. 9, which aim to strengthen the state’s mining industry and secure mineral supply chains.
ICSM's interdisciplinary focus integrates expertise from various fields including geology, engineering, and law, enhancing research and educational offerings. Over the past six years, the University has secured more than $20 million for critical minerals projects.
