UNSW and Partners Develop AI-Enhanced Solar Energy System for Apartments
A $1.2 million initiative aims to integrate AI with solar energy systems in apartments, enhancing energy efficiency and access. This project addresses the energy access gap for over 2.5 million Australians living in apartment buildings, where only 3.5% currently utilize rooftop solar.

A partnership involving UNSW Canberra, Voltval, and JT Solar Technology is piloting an AI-driven Modular Power Portal System (MPPS) to enhance rooftop solar energy and battery storage in apartment buildings. Funded by a $1.2 million grant from Australia's TRaCE program, this initiative aims to optimize energy use for over 2.5 million Australians in apartments, where solar adoption is currently low due to shared ownership complexities and outdated infrastructure.
The pilot will test this technology across various sites in Sydney, with expectations of reducing operational costs by up to 30%. Successful implementation could set a precedent for similar projects in urban environments globally, addressing barriers to clean energy adoption.
