Urgent Action Needed on Sewage Discharge into River Shannon in Montpellier
Limerick Council is urged to collaborate with Uisce Éireann for a wastewater treatment facility in Montpellier to prevent untreated sewage from entering the River Shannon. This situation poses significant public health risks, particularly to vulnerable users of the river.

Limerick Council has been called to work with Uisce Éireann to initiate the installation of a wastewater treatment plant for Montpellier. Currently, a septic tank serving 16 houses discharges untreated sewage directly into the River Shannon through an open pipe.
This discharge occurs in a high-flood-risk zone, necessitating manual closure of the pipe during floods, which can lead to raw sewage backing up into homes. Nearby, a boat mooring point used by The Shannon Dragon Project and recreational users is less than 100 meters from the discharge site, raising health concerns. Local councillors have emphasized the urgency of this issue, stating that it has persisted since 2020 and requires immediate attention from Irish Water to address water quality and public health risks.
