Urine Contamination Incident at Odisha's Rural Water Supply Office Sparks Outrage and Investigation

HYDROGEN

In a disturbing incident that has generated significant public outrage, a peon from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) office in Gajapati district, Odisha, has been arrested for allegedly serving urine instead of water to a junior engineer. The accused, Siba Narayan Nayak, was taken into custody following a First Information Report (FIR) filed by Sachin Gouda, a Junior Engineer who began his tenure at the RWSS office on July 22.

The incident occurred on July 23 when Gouda requested drinking water after dinner. Instead, he received a steel bottle containing a suspicious liquid. After consuming the liquid, Gouda and two other employees, Ghana and Surya, experienced discomfort and suspected it was not water.

Laboratory testing identified 2.0 PPM ammonia in the sample, indicating potential urine contamination. A follow-up sample has been sent to a facility in Paralakhemundi for confirmation.

Gouda fell ill post-consumption and is currently receiving medical treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. After his recovery, he filed a formal complaint with R. Udayagiri police, prompting the arrest of Nayak.

In his defense, Nayak claimed, "I brought the water along with his food. I don't know what happened in between. I've done nothing wrong. I've left everything to God." The incident has drawn attention from the Odisha Water Resources Directorate and has been escalated to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for further investigation.

Authorities are conducting a thorough inquiry, which includes verifying lab results and questioning other staff present during the incident, highlighting the necessity of accountability in public service environments.
