Uruguay Considers UK Offer for Three Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessels
Uruguay is evaluating a British proposal to acquire three decommissioned Royal Navy offshore patrol vessels, HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn, scheduled for decommissioning in 2028. The vessels, measuring 79.5 meters and displacing 1,700 tons, align with the Uruguayan Navy's operational needs. Each vessel is priced at approximately $20 million. Additionally, Uruguay has expressed interest in a Reliance-class vessel from the U.S. for coastal patrol duties, despite past rejections due to the vessel's age.

Uruguay's government is considering a British offer for three Royal Navy offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), HMS Tyne, HMS Mersey, and HMS Severn, which are set to be decommissioned in 2028. This interest follows the cancellation of a contract with Spanish shipyard Cardama, leaving a patrol capability gap.
Each vessel would cost around $20 million, compared to $60 million for new OPVs. Uruguay also expressed interest in a Reliance-class vessel from the U.S. for interim coastal patrol duties, despite its age and previous rejection by former Navy Commander Jorge Wilson. Negotiations with the UK are being conducted confidentially.
