US Advocates 'Peace Through Strength' Strategy to Deter China
The US emphasizes a strong military posture in the Indo-Pacific to deter Chinese influence. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth urges regional allies to enhance their defense spending to support collective security efforts.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has articulated a strategy of 'peace through strength' to deter Chinese expansionism in the Indo-Pacific region. As part of this approach, he stressed that the US military must maintain a robust posture while urging allies to increase their defense contributions.
During discussions on the proposed US$1.5 trillion defense budget for FY 2027, he noted that deterring China is a top national security priority, alongside homeland defense. The Pentagon plans to strengthen military communications with China to mitigate tensions, while also calling for increased military spending from allies.
The US Navy's F/A-XX Next Generation Fighter program is projected to advance, with a contract decision expected by August 2026, despite funding constraints compared to the Air Force's F-47 program. This situation highlights a critical balance between maintaining defense readiness and managing resource allocation.
