US Air Force Invests in B-1B and B-2 Bomber Modernization
The USAF announces a $1.35 billion investment for B-2 Spirit upgrades and $342 million for B-1B Lancer modernization by 2031. This decision reflects an adjustment to global military needs and the ongoing operational relevance of these bombers despite the upcoming B-21 Raider's introduction.

The USAF plans to allocate $342 million for the modernization of B-1B Lancer bombers from 2027 to 2031, ensuring operational effectiveness until at least 2037. Concurrently, $1.35 billion will be invested in upgrading 19 B-2 Spirit bombers during the same timeframe.
The B-1B's ability to carry a substantial conventional payload, exceeding 34 tons, and the B-2’s unique stealth capabilities to deploy GBU-57 MOP bombs highlight their ongoing strategic importance. The successful operational use of these aircraft in recent military actions underscores their value, prompting a reevaluation of earlier retirement plans. This modernization could mitigate risks during the transition to the B-21 Raider, which is not expected to reach full operational capability for years.
