U.S. Air Force to Maintain C-5M Galaxy Fleet Until FY2050 for Strategic Heavy Lift
The U.S. Air Force plans to sustain the C-5M Galaxy fleet as its primary strategic heavy lift aircraft through FY2050. This initiative underscores the aircraft's significance in maintaining military logistics capabilities and force projection.
The C-5M Galaxy is set to remain operational until FY2050, leveraging its substantial payload capacity of 281,001 pounds and a maximum takeoff weight of 840,000 pounds. Its unique drive-through loading configuration allows for simultaneous loading from both ends, enhancing efficiency in deploying armored vehicles and complex military cargo.
The aircraft's range of 4,800 nautical miles with a substantial cargo load is critical for intercontinental logistics. Sustainment will require extensive maintenance, including depot-level structural work and addressing avionics obsolescence.
The Air Force's FY2027 budget includes funding for spares and support equipment to ensure fleet viability. As the C-5M ages, the Next Generation Airlift (NGAL) program faces the challenge of designing a replacement that meets similar operational needs while improving flexibility and reducing maintenance demands. Until NGAL is fully developed, the C-5M will remain essential for strategic military operations.
