U.S. Army Corps Proposes Beneficial Use of Dredged Material for Projects in Delaware
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to dredge the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, utilizing two-thirds of the 90,000 cubic yards of sediment for local projects, including shoreline stabilization at Thompson Island and filling a lagoon at Sussex County's wastewater facility. A $9.6 million contract was awarded to Cottrell Contracting Corporation for the dredging operations, expected to start in fall 2026.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to begin dredging the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in fall 2026, removing approximately 90,000 cubic yards of sediment. A proposal aims to use about 60,000 cubic yards for two local projects: shoreline stabilization on Thompson Island and filling a lagoon at the Sussex County wastewater treatment facility.
The contract for dredging was awarded to Cottrell Contracting Corporation for $9.6 million. The remaining sediment will be deposited at designated sites in Lewes. This plan is intended to enhance environmental value and prepare for future construction projects.
