The U.S. is projected to increase data center construction from 12 gigawatts in 2026 to 35 GW by 2030, assuming recruitment for specialized trades remains high. However, Bernstein analysts indicate that a labor shortage in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing sectors will limit this growth.
Currently, only 30% of the available workforce resides in areas where 70% of future projects are planned. The expected 35 GW will not meet the 40 GW needed for mid-scale power generator capacity. Modular construction could alleviate labor constraints by shifting work to factories, benefiting companies like Eaton and Schneider Electric.
