US Denies A-10 Thunderbolt Sale to Nigeria Amid Munitions Approval
The U.S. has not authorized the sale of A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft to Nigeria, contradicting social media claims. A $346 million munitions deal for Nigeria was approved in August 2025, but it does not include new aircraft.
Despite claims circulating on social media, the United States has not approved a sale of A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force. A thorough review of the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) database reveals no record of such a sale for 2026.
On April 20, 2026, U.S. Secretary of the Air Force, Troy E. Meink, announced an extension of the A-10's service life through 2030 following its performance in Operation Epic Fury.
In contrast, a $346 million sale of munitions, including precision bombs, was approved for Nigeria in August 2025, aimed at enhancing existing capabilities rather than introducing new aircraft. The A-10 has never been sold to foreign nations due to its specific maintenance needs and tactical role. Misattributions regarding the A-10 sale could mislead stakeholders about U.S. military support.
