US Focuses on Critical Minerals to Counter China's Supply Dominance
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted that China's control over critical mineral supply chains poses significant risks to economic and national security. The US is actively forming international partnerships to diversify sourcing and processing of essential minerals like lithium and cobalt, crucial for advanced technologies and defense systems.

China currently dominates approximately 70% of global rare-earth production and nearly 90% of processing capacity, creating strategic vulnerabilities for the US and its allies in Europe and Asia. The Trump administration is prioritizing international cooperation, having engaged over 50 countries at the inaugural Critical Minerals Ministerial to establish resilient supply chains.
Partnerships with nations such as Australia, Japan, and India are part of broader efforts to develop alternative sources. Critical minerals are vital for sectors including electric vehicles and semiconductor production, making diversification critical for national security. The US aims to reduce reliance on China through enhanced diplomatic and investment strategies in mineral processing and sourcing.
