US Forest Service Halts Review of Twin Metals Mine Proposal Near Boundary Waters
The US Forest Service will not conduct further evaluations of the Twin Metals Minnesota LLC mine proposal. This decision follows Congress lifting a mining moratorium in April, raising concerns over environmental impacts.

The US Forest Service has announced it will not pursue additional reviews of the Twin Metals Minnesota LLC copper-nickel mine proposal near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Chief Tom Schultz indicated that the agency has not established its next steps following the lifting of a moratorium on mining activities by Congress.
During a Senate committee hearing, Senator Tina Smith emphasized the agency's obligation to assess the mine's potential impacts. This decision may lead to increased scrutiny from environmental groups and stakeholders concerned about ecological risks in the region.
