U.S. Government to Control Major Japanese-Funded Power Plant Project in Ohio
A $33 billion natural-gas power plant in Southern Ohio will be funded by Japan and owned by the U.S. government. This project, which also involves a major AI data center, reflects strategic economic collaboration amid geopolitical tensions.

The U.S. government is set to own a $33 billion natural-gas power plant in Southern Ohio, funded by Japan. The PORTS Technology Campus will generate 9.2 gigawatts of electricity, enough to supply over half of Ohio's needs, utilizing one-third of the state's daily natural-gas output.
It will also host the world's most powerful AI data center, with operations commencing in 2028. This initiative is part of Japan's $550 billion investment in the U.S., aimed at countering potential trade tariffs.
While the U.S. benefits from job creation and energy assurance, concerns exist regarding accountability and the project’s economic viability. Japan's involvement, primarily political, may strengthen defense ties with the U.S. amid rising competition for AI dominance.
