US Lithium Production Threatened by Water Shortages Amid Climate Change
Water scarcity in the US could hinder lithium extraction, prompting firms to invest in recycling technologies. This critical mineral is essential for the green transition, particularly in electric vehicle and battery production.

The US Department of Energy has allocated a $2.3 billion loan for the Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada, operated by Lithium Americas. However, climate change is impacting water distribution in the western US, raising concerns about the availability of water for existing and planned lithium mines.
Current domestic lithium production is highly concentrated, relying on a single facility in Nevada, producing approximately 4,000 tons annually. The US imports 54% of its lithium from Chile and 43% from Argentina.
Without sufficient water supply, domestic production may not meet rising demand, leading to increased imports. Recycling and urban mining could provide partial solutions, but industry experts agree that the US will likely remain dependent on imported lithium.
