U.S. Navy Awards $117M Contract for MK 54 Torpedo Sonar Kits
The U.S. Navy has awarded a $116.6 million contract to General Dynamics Mission Systems for sonar kits for the MK 54 torpedo, extending production through April 2029. This investment is critical for enhancing anti-submarine capabilities amid increasing threats from China's expanding submarine fleet.

The U.S. Navy's $116.6 million contract with General Dynamics Mission Systems will support the production of sonar assembly kits for the MK 54 lightweight torpedo, a key anti-submarine weapon. Production will occur across six states, funded through Navy weapons procurement from three fiscal years, and continues until April 2029.
The MK 54, designated Mod 1, has been under development since 2007 to improve its sonar and computing capabilities. Current assessments highlight reliability issues, necessitating ongoing investment for refinement.
The urgency for enhanced undersea capabilities is driven by projections of China's submarine force growth, which could reach 80 vessels by 2035. This contract not only supports U.S. naval operations but also benefits allied forces using compatible technology, reinforcing international defense collaborations.
