U.S. Navy Implements AI System for Submarine Production Enhancement
The U.S. Navy has launched ShipOS, an AI-driven system aimed at improving Columbia and Virginia-class submarine production. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the maritime industrial base and enhance operational capabilities amid growing concerns over China's naval expansion.

ShipOS was officially launched in December 2025, utilizing federal funding to modernize submarine production processes. The system aims to achieve production rates of one Columbia-class SSBN and two Virginia-class SSNs annually by fiscal year 2031.
Efficiency gains from pilot deployments indicate a significant reduction in production planning time from 160 hours to under 10 minutes. The Navy's investment plan allocates nearly $125 billion for submarine construction through FY31, with over $6.2 billion designated for industrial base stability.
This reflects the need for a transformation in manufacturing management to meet production demands amid concerns over China's shipbuilding capabilities. The Navy plans to extend ShipOS across additional shipbuilders by the end of 2026, enhancing resilience against supply chain disruptions and boosting combat readiness.
