US Plans Lunar Rover Missions with Astrobotic and Astrolab for NASA's Artemis Program

SPACE ECONOMY

The US is set to send a rover back to the moon, marking its re-entry into lunar robotics after 55 years, with a launch planned as early as July. Astrobotic and Astrolab are collaborating on the FLIP (FLEX Lunar Innovation Program) rover, a golf-cart-sized vehicle intended for the Nobile Crater near the moon's south pole, as part of a NASA initiative to lease rovers for the Artemis program.

FLIP features zero-point turns and semi-autonomous navigation. A larger crew-capable rover, FLEX (Flexible Logistics and Exploration), is also under development for a 2028 launch, capable of carrying over 3,000 lbs and two astronauts.

These rovers aim to support NASA's Artemis program and provide transportation for astronauts returning to the moon. Additionally, Blue Origin's Blue Moon spacecraft is scheduled for launch in 2026, enhancing lunar exploration efforts.
