U.S. Plans New Nuclear Bunker Buster: NDS-A Development Funding Requested
The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking $99.794 million for the Nuclear Deterrent System-Air-delivered (NDS-A) in FY 2027. This initiative aims to enhance capabilities against hardened targets, reflecting the evolving threat landscape from adversaries with deep underground facilities.

The Department of Energy has proposed $99.794 million for the development of the NDS-A in its FY 2027 budget. This initiative is part of a multi-phase process aimed at addressing capabilities against deeply buried targets, which have increased in number and sophistication over recent years due to efforts by Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran.
Currently, the B61-11 is the only air-delivered nuclear weapon designed for such tasks. The NDS-A is expected to enhance U.S. nuclear options, especially given the limitations of existing systems against modern threats. As the geopolitical landscape shifts, the need for effective nuclear deterrence becomes increasingly critical, presenting both opportunities and risks in international relations.
