US Sanctions Target Rwandan Defense Forces for Violating Peace Agreement with DRC
The US Treasury imposed sanctions on the Rwandan Defense Forces and four officials for violating a December 2025 peace agreement with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), amid ongoing conflict in eastern DRC. Despite these sanctions, US trade agreements with Rwandan mineral firms continue, allowing the M23 to dominate coltan exports and achieve record gold exports. Additionally, US aid to Rwanda remains substantial, totaling nearly $200 million in 2024.

On March 2, 2026, the US Treasury sanctioned the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF) and four officials for violating the December 2025 peace agreement with the DRC. The RDF, allied with the M23, has played a pivotal role in the conflict in eastern DRC, seizing key cities and mines.
Despite sanctions, US trade agreements with Rwandan mineral firms persist, undermining their impact. The M23 monopolizes coltan exports, generating approximately $800,000 monthly, and has achieved record gold exports of $2 billion in 2025. US aid to Rwanda remains significant, with nearly $200 million in 2024, despite ongoing violations of peace agreements.
