US Trade Policy Shifts Towards Protectionism with High Tariffs Post-Liberation Day
Atradius reports a significant rise in US protectionism, with tariffs now six times higher than before. Import resilience is driven by strong demand for semiconductors and AI-related electronics.

The US has entered a structurally protectionist phase, with tariffs reaching 13.9%, significantly above previous levels. Despite legal adjustments and a Supreme Court ruling overturning some emergency tariffs, the fundamental shift in trade policy remains focused on geopolitical objectives.
Tariffs, including a temporary universal rate of 10%, continue to reshape supply chains without addressing Washington's trade deficit. Companies are turning to alternative Asian partners and Mexico, incurring costs that hinder reshoring efforts and increase operational pressures. Meanwhile, US imports persist, bolstered by high-tech goods tied to AI and data centers, with significant growth in imports from Taiwan and Vietnam.
