USA Halts Copper Imports from Serbia Zijin Copper Amid Forced Labor Allegations
The USA has banned copper imports from Serbia Zijin Copper due to suspicions of forced labor practices. This decision highlights the growing competition between the USA and China over strategic resources, with significant implications for supply chains.

The USA has implemented a ban on copper imports from Serbia Zijin Copper, a company wholly owned by China's Zijin Mining Group. This decision arises from allegations of forced labor at the company's operations in Bor, Serbia, where approximately 6,000 workers are employed and 296,000 tons of copper are produced annually.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has indicated that workers may face wage delays, restricted movement, and confiscation of passports. The ban reflects increased tensions between the USA and China over control of key resources, particularly as demand for copper is expected to surge with advancements in energy technologies. While production in Serbia will continue, the import halt could hinder Zijin's ability to access U.S. markets.
