USACE Mandates Advanced Simulation for Navigation Project Optimization
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has mandated the use of advanced simulation for all navigation projects to enhance efficiency and safety. This policy aims to leverage engineering resources and marine pilot expertise, significantly impacting project design and cost management in U.S. maritime infrastructure.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has officially made advanced simulation a required component in the design of navigation projects, utilizing the U.S. Army Watercraft and Ship Simulator.
This facility, part of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Mississippi, features immersive environments for simulating maritime conditions and is aimed at optimizing designs to improve safety and operational efficiency. The move, articulated in a recent policy memorandum, is expected to enhance project outcomes and reduce costs significantly, as seen in the reopening of the Port of Baltimore after bridge collapse, which cut economic losses from $15 million to under $5 million.
Further studies, such as the Port of Nome expansion, demonstrated potential savings exceeding $100 million. This directive also encourages partnerships with other simulation facilities, aiming to maximize USACE's capabilities in infrastructure design.
