USACE Terminates Contract with Shimmick Construction at Chickamauga Lock Project
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has terminated its contract with Shimmick Construction to ensure timely completion of the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project. This decision aims to safeguard taxpayer funds and maintain project integrity, with a new operational lock anticipated by 2028.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Nashville District has terminated its contract with Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. for the Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project, effective May 8, 2026. This action addresses the contractor's failure to meet essential project deadlines and quality standards, leading to a loss of confidence in their performance.
The project, initially authorized at $267 million, has escalated to an estimated $1.57 billion. USACE plans to explore all options to complete the remaining construction and achieve operational status for the navigation lock by 2028, which will significantly increase capacity from one to nine barges. Termination aligns with USACE's commitment to fiscal responsibility and infrastructure efficiency.
