USAF Advances GBU-76/B Next Generation Penetrator Project with $169M Prototype Funding
The U.S. Air Force has designated the GBU-76/B as the Next Generation Penetrator and seeks $169 million for its prototype in fiscal 2027. The initiative is aimed at enhancing capabilities for penetrating deeply buried targets, following the operational use of the GBU-57 MOP.

The U.S. Air Force aims to invest approximately $169 million in fiscal 2027 for the GBU-76/B, the Next Generation Penetrator, and is conducting market research for potential contractors. This initiative includes a solicitation for a multiple-award indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract to support research, development, production, and testing of the GBU-76/B.
The Air Force has previously utilized the GBU-57 MOP, with its first operational deployment occurring in June 2025 against Iranian nuclear facilities. The GBU-76/B is intended to maintain similar operational capabilities.
Interested vendors must demonstrate expertise in large penetrator systems with weights between 20,000 and 30,000 pounds, and responses are due by June 16. The program excludes foreign-owned firms, ensuring domestic capabilities are prioritized. Should the GBU-76/B be lighter than its predecessor, it may enable the B-21 Raider to deploy multiple units.
