USAF Considers Retirement of U-2 Dragon Lady Amid Shift to New Aircraft
The USAF plans to retire all 23 remaining U-2 aircraft by 2027 to reallocate funding for new aircraft acquisitions. With a $30.7 billion investment targeting advanced platforms like the F-35A and B-21 Raider, the move reflects a strategic pivot towards modern military capabilities in light of great power competition.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is set to retire its fleet of 23 U-2 Dragon Lady aircraft by 2027, reallocating the savings towards acquiring 108 new models. This includes 38 F-35As, 24 F-15EXs, and 15 KC-46 Pegasus tankers as part of a $30.7 billion purchase plan.
The U-2s will be flown to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base for long-term storage and maintenance. The rationale for retirement includes advancements in ISR satellite technology and drones, which provide safer and more efficient reconnaissance capabilities. Despite its retirement, the U-2 is expected to be utilized for technology testing, ensuring its legacy continues in supporting future airpower developments.
