USGS and New Mexico Partner to Map Mineral Resources in Southern Region
The USGS is collaborating with New Mexico's Bureau of Geology to map critical mineral resources, enhancing national security and economic stability. This initiative targets rare earth minerals like gallium and germanium, vital for electronics and renewable energy.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and New Mexico's Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources are mapping mineral resources in southern New Mexico as part of the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative. This project aims to identify critical minerals essential for the U.S. economy and national security, with a focus on gallium and germanium, which are used in electronics and solar cells.
Survey flights will take place through fall 2026, utilizing aircraft equipped with passive sensors for data collection. The collaboration aims to enhance understanding of mineral, groundwater, and geothermal resources, indicating potential economic opportunities in rare earth mining.
