Utah Approves 9 GW Stratos Data Center Project to Halve State Electricity Consumption
The Utah Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) has approved the Stratos project, a massive 9 GW data center. This initiative will enable the facility to generate its own energy, significantly reducing reliance on the state's existing electrical grid and potentially injecting surplus energy back into it.

The Stratos project, spearheaded by O'Leary Digital, aims to achieve a capacity of 9 GW, surpassing Utah's current average consumption of approximately 4 GW. The facility, spanning over 16,000 acres, will utilize the Ruby Pipeline for local energy generation, ensuring it does not draw from the existing grid.
Initial phases will require around 3 GW of capacity, with full capability expected in the future. MIDA has incentivized the project by significantly reducing energy taxes and offering property tax rebates, projecting annual revenues of $30 million initially, increasing to over $100 million as operations ramp up.
The initiative reflects a broader trend where tech companies are establishing autonomous energy infrastructures to mitigate grid dependency. This could pose risks regarding energy resource allocation for local communities as demand from such large facilities grows.
