UTSG's Lash Miller Expansion to Enhance AI-Driven Materials Research with $379.5M Funding
The Lash Miller Building Expansion at UTSG, opening in fall 2026, includes new labs and funding from CFREF and U of T. It supports the Acceleration Consortium's aim to accelerate discoveries using AI and automation, integrating self-driving labs (SDLs) for efficient material synthesis. SDLs have economic potential, with applications in biotechnology and energy. The expansion also plans to offer opportunities for students and address challenges in AI research compliance and ethics.

The Lash Miller Building Expansion at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSG) is set to open in fall 2026, featuring renovated lecture halls and new laboratories, supported by a $199.5 million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund and $180 million from the University of Toronto. This expansion will facilitate the Acceleration Consortium's efforts to revolutionize materials research through AI and automation, utilizing self-driving labs (SDLs) to enhance material discovery.
SDLs combine machine learning and robotics to improve experimentation processes, with applications showing promise in biotechnology and energy sectors. Projects include the discovery of lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery and optimizing hydrogen production. The initiative will create scholarships and research placements for students at U of T, while addressing legal and ethical challenges associated with AI use in research.
