Vaisala Launches Origo to Reduce Energy Waste in Data Center Cooling by $805 Million Annually
Vaisala has introduced Origo, a modular measurement platform designed to improve environmental monitoring in data centers. Approximately 80% of the world's 12,000 data centers rely on air cooling, which can waste around $805 million annually due to a mere 0.5 °C temperature deviation.
This error can cost a 10 MW data center over $800,000 in wasted cooling energy over ten years. While liquid cooling is gaining traction for high-density AI workloads, air cooling remains essential. Origo offers a precision of ±0.1 °C and ±1% relative humidity, helping reduce unnecessary cooling and ensuring reliable environmental control.
The platform's modular design allows for monitoring multiple parameters, making it suitable for critical environments. The total potential savings from eliminating the 0.5 °C error across all air-cooled data centers could reach approximately $8 billion over ten years, with the global data center energy consumption expected to double by 2030.
